“Test (2025)” is a Tamil language sports drama film directed by S. Sashikanth and it is also his directorial debut. The film is set against the backdrop of Test cricket, but focuses beyond the sport itself—it examines the human psyche, narcissism, and the decisions one makes in difficult situations. The film’s main cast includes seasoned actors like R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, Siddharth and Meera Jasmine, whose strong performances effectively bring out the emotional layers of the film. Especially Siddharth’s character, who is a Test cricketer, connects the audience with his inner struggle and sacrifice. The director took inspiration from an interview of Virat Kohli to create this story, which shows the dedication and passion of a young player. The film’s cinematography, background score and use of live sound give it an authentic feel. “Test” is not just a game, but the story of a difficult test of life.

Test (2025 film) Story
“Test” is an emotional and inspiring story that revolves around the lives of three different characters who go through the toughest test of life.
Arjun Venkatraman (Siddharth) is one of the top cricketers in India. With years of hard work and dedication, he has made a name for himself in the cricket world. But due to the recent decline in his performance, the cricket board requests him to retire. Arjun, who considers sport to be his everything, is unable to accept this decision and decides to continue fighting. For him, it becomes not just a game but a question of his identity and self-respect.
On the other hand, Kumudha (Nayanthara) is a school teacher who has a deep desire to become a mother. She is trying to become a mother through IVF (in vitro fertilization). Her husband Saravanan (R. Madhavan) is a scientist who is an MIT graduate and is currently working on a crucial project that will change the future of India. The pressure of work and the challenges of personal life put her in a deep mental conflict.
These three characters – an athlete, a teacher, and a scientist – are following different paths, but life puts them in situations where their patience, determination, and values are tested. The film shows how a person goes through struggles and self-discovery and how hardships help him grow.
“The Test” is not just a story of a game, it is a story of the real test of life.
Movie Review
“Test” is an interesting but somewhat unbalanced film that revolves around the lives of three lead characters – Amudha, Saravanan and Arjun. Amudha (Nayanthara) is a school teacher who deeply desires to become a mother and is trying to conceive through IVF. Her husband Saravanan (R. Madhavan) is an MIT-educated scientist who is working on an ambitious project based on hydrogen fuel for India. Arjun (Siddharth) is Amudha’s childhood friend and a famous but now in decline cricketer. This test match is Arjun’s last chance to prove himself.
The first half of the film is emotionally gripping and connects the audience to the characters’ psyche, conflict and dilemma. But as the story progresses and the second half goes into thriller mode, the film starts to go a bit off track. Elements like spot fixing, blackmail and political pressure are there in the story but their execution remains weak. At this point, the emotional aspect of the film takes a back seat and the characters lack depth.
Though the script is flawed at places and some scenes seem stretched, the film still offers a much better experience than the recent OTT flops. Some scenes do seem long, but the audience does not get up from their seats or feel like skipping them – this in itself is a success of the film.
Talking about the performances, R. Madhavan has brought a multi-layered performance as always. His character is mature and impressive. Siddharth shines in a few scenes but most of the time his expressions seem “meh”. Nayanthara has once again proved that she can play every character with dignity and emotional depth. Her simple but attractive costumes also grab the attention of the audience. The return of Meera Jasmine is a pleasant surprise – she has retained her innocence and charm even after years.
This is a commendable first attempt for director S. Sasikant. Technically, the film is strong – the cinematography, editing and music are all commendable. But the script needed some more finesse, especially in the second half.
Overall, “Test” has its flaws – long runtime, some illogical plot points and sometimes complex characters – but its craft, acting and effort make it worth a watch. If it weren’t for the strong cast, this film might not have seen the light of day. Hopefully, Kollywood will continue to promote such “test” films – not just hollow mass entertainers starring old heroes.
Madhavan, don’t stop experimenting with new scripts – your innings has just begun.

Conclusion
“Test” is a brave attempt at combining sports, emotional conflict and personal ambitions. The film’s weak script and some dragging scenes take away from its impact, but the strong acting and technical presentation make it worth a watch. R. Madhavan, Nayanthara and Meera Jasmine have strengthened the story with their performances. This is director Sashikanth’s first film, which raises hopes that he will do better in the future. If you like content-driven cinema, then “Test” can be an interesting experience for you.
