Rekhachithram Story
The film “Rekhachitram” begins on a mysterious night when four men silently carry a dead body out of a house. Two children witness the scene but assume it to be a part of a film. The story moves to the present where an old rich man named Rajendran, burdened by his past, confesses on Facebook Live that in 1985 he, along with two others, murdered a girl and buried her body. He then commits suicide.
Vivek Gopinath, a suspended police officer, is transferred to the Malakkappara police station and is assigned to investigate Rajendran’s suicide case. During the excavation, a female skeleton and an anklet are found, which leads to the investigation. Vivek digs through old records and finds out that Rekha, a junior artist who disappeared during the shooting of the film “Kathodu Kathoram”, could be the victim.
During the investigation, Vivek finds out that Rekha was murdered to frame her in a theft case. The main culprits were Vincent (Vakkachan) and his girlfriend Pushpam (now known as Alice). Vivek, despite many obstacles, brings out the truth and gets Vincent arrested. Along with justice for Rekha’s family, an unfulfilled wish is also fulfilled — actor Mammootty’s autograph for Rekha is handed over to her sister. The film ends on an emotional note, with glimpses of Rekha’s dreams.
Movie Review
“Rekhachitram” is a well-crafted investigation drama, presented with a brilliant screenplay and strong acting. The story of the film is based on a murder investigation, which takes place in 1985 during the shooting of Mammootty’s film “Kathodu Kathoram”. This story has been presented boldly through the Alternate History genre.
Director Jofin T. Chacko has to be applauded for so confidently exploring an unknown and less touched genre in Malayalam cinema. Jofin has brought the imagination of the writers to the screen with complete honesty and efficiency, due to which the audience gets completely immersed in the story. Every character has been given due importance in the screenplay and the timely use of ‘X factor’ in the story makes it even more impressive.
Asif Ali has given another memorable performance in the film as a police officer. Anaswara Rajan has played the central role with full seriousness and emotionality, which is the soul of the story. Zareen Shihab, Saikumar, Megha Thomas, Indrans and Srikanth Murali have also performed brilliantly in their roles.
On the technical side, cinematographer Appu Prabhakar’s vibrant frames, Shameer Muhammed’s sharp editing, Majib Majeed’s mysterious background score and Jayadevan Chakkadath’s precise audiography (especially in the rain scenes) have increased the impact of the film manifold. Ronex Xavier has crafted the looks and presence of the lead characters and production designer Shaji Naduvil has beautifully recreated the atmosphere of the 80s. Hats off to the technical team for all these efforts.
Producers Venu Kunnappilly and Anto Joseph recognized the potential of this unique story and played a vital role in bringing it to life. Their contribution is definitely commendable.
Though the film gets a bit predictable at times and the pace could have been more nimble at places, its simplicity is what makes it special. For those expecting a high-thrill experience, the film might fall a little short, but it still manages to hold its own till the end.
“Rekhachitram” pays a beautiful tribute to 80s Malayalam cinema and especially Mammootty’s influence. Weaving “Kathodu Kathoram” closely into the story was a creative decision that definitely deserves appreciation.
On the whole, “Rekhachitram” is a well-made investigation drama that deserves to be watched on the big screen.
